Desperate Homeschooling Parents Plead for Help

Today is Domenic Johansson’s 12th birthday. He was abducted from his parents by the Swedish government at age 7 for his parents’ “crime” of homeschooling him. In extreme cruelty, the Swedish government has refused to reunite this child with his loving parents and instead handed him off to be raised by strangers and attend government school. Domenic is the Johanssons’ only child.

His parents are not allowed to see or communicate with him, even on his 12th birthday. Because the Swedish government is keeping Domenic isolated from his parents, Domenic doesn’t even know that his parents love him, or that they desperately long to be reunited and have been fighting vigorously all these years to end this egregious violation of their family’s rights.

Radio Sweden reports on a case where a seven-year old child was taken away from his parents, and the boy was placed in a foster home. The parents say it was partly because they refused to send their child to school. On Thursday, the Swedish Supreme Court decided not to take up their case. [sr.se]

Third anniversary of Domenic Johansson’s removal from the plane and his parents

Yesterday, June 25, 2012, was the third anniversary of Domenic Johansson’s removal from the plane on which he and his parents were sitting, waiting to leave Sweden for India to start a new life. Swedish social authorities and the police violated Domenic’s and his family members’ basic human rights guaranteed in the European Convention Additional Protocol 4 Article 2:2, which guarantees: “Everyone is free to leave any country including his own”. Yet they were prevented from leaving Sweden.

Swedish Court Vindicates Johansson Parents

To whom do children belong - their parents or the state?

I don’t pretend to know the rights and wrongs of Sweden’s Domenic Johansson case, and here’s a link to an article which doesn’t pretend to be objective, but I do know that when I google the case I can’t find anything on the other side. What apparently happened was that almost two years ago the Swedish government swooped down on the Johansson family and seized their then-seven-year-old son Domenic because he was being homeschooled. And the Swedish government still won’t give him back to his parents.

I’m pretty sure most people will agree that the only reasonable grounds for separating a young child from his or her parents is neglect or abuse - which homeschooling clearly isn’t. According to the linked-to article, however, the Swedish government’s actions are a manifestation of its adherence to the Platonic philosophy whereby children are the property of the state and their education is the responsibility of the state. The Platonic view is in sharp contrast to the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights, with its Article 30, Clause 3 declaration: “Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children”.

So which approach is better? Or can there be a middle ground? If so, what is it? H/T AMP

Outcry over Sweden’s Persecution of Homeschoolers Grows

The Swedish government was already facing worldwide criticism from human rights groups for what opponents called its “kidnapping” of Domenic Johansson. The then-7-year-old homeschooler was abducted from an airplane bound for India by police after his parents refused to stop educating him at home — and that was in June of 2009, while homeschooling was still technically legal. The boy remains in state custody, completely isolated from his parents.

Homeschool Parents May Lose Child Custody Permanently

n a monumental development for homeschool rights, Swedish parents may permanently lose custody of their child. The implications of the controversial case are enough to send chills down the spine of anyone who chooses to homeschool their children.

Swedish officials on the Island of Gotland are moving to terminate the parental rights of homeschool parents Christer and Annie Johansson. The state seized 7-year-old Domenic in June 2009. Currently 9 years old, the boy has been held in state foster care for more than 24 months. Domenic’s entire family has been denied virtually any contact with him during that time.

Now, the state wants to give permanent custody to the foster family.

"The United States Supreme Court has called the termination of parental rights the family court equivalent of the death penalty," says Michael Donnelly, director of International Relations at the Home School Legal Defense Association, or HSLDA.

HSLDA and the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) filed a joint application on behalf of the Johansson family at the European Court of Human Rights in June 2010 and have been working to support the family since shortly after Domenic's seizure. The groups are now urging supporters to write letters in hopes of renewing attention to the family's case and to encourage Swedish officials to release Domenic back to his family.

"The government shouldn't abduct and imprison children simply because it doesn't like homeschooling. That's bad enough. But now the state is going even further by attempting to get the parents out of the way altogether," says ADF legal counsel Roger Kiska. "This simply cannot stand. We will do everything in our power to help reunite this family."

HSLDA: Officials Seek to Terminate Johansson Parenthood

HSLDA has learned that Swedish officials on the Island of Gotland may be seeking to terminate the parental rights of Annie and Christer Johansson. Seven-year old Domenic Johansson was snatched by a fully armed Swedish police unit in June 2009 while on board an airplane bound for Annie’s homeland of India. Among the primary reasons given for the seizure was the fact that Domenic was homeschooled. His entire family has been denied any contact with their son for nearly a year. HSLDA and the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) filed a joint application on behalf of the Johansson family at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in June 2010 and have been working to support the family since shortly after Domenic’s seizure.
